Fenugreek, also known as methi, and the botanical name of Trigonella Foenum-Graecum, is a plant that is widely grown in Asia and the Mediterranean region.
It produces wonderful seeds and greens which are very beneficial for your health and also very rich in aromas, they are going to add great flavors and tastes to your foods.
However, most people don’t have access to fenugreek plants and especially greens, they can find fenugreek seeds for sale, but most of the time, the quality is going to be mediocre!
A great way to get fresh and amazingly tasty fenugreek leaves and seeds is to grow it yourself; however, most do not have space and adequate soils for growing this plant!
I do not have these spaces too, what I have is a very small garden near my house, it’s used for growing other vegetables, however I can grow successfully fenugreek all year long!

They are available in most garden shops, and they are very inexpensive and come in different sizes and shapes.
Here is what you are required for growing fenugreek in pots:
- A slightly acidic soil that you need to enrich with high-quality compost.
- Wide and deep growing pots, you can use the plastic ones, they are cheaper and will do the job.
- And a place that’s facing the sun
Now, here is how to plant fenugreek seeds in pots:
Fenugreek will grow to about half a meter, 50 to 70 centimeters, it requires a well-drained rich soil, and it’s a fast sprouting plants, this means that you do not have to wait a long time to see it growing, however when planting it, you should sow the seeds deeply, about ten centimeters.
Again, fenugreek enjoys a sunny place, and doesn’t thrive in poor soil, that is why you have to be very generous with the compost.
Don’t transplant it as it will not survive! I’ve tried it and destroyed a year’s harvest!
When to plant fenugreek seeds?
After winter, when the frost has passed, although I’ve heard of some varieties that can survive frost, but I have never experimented with them.
How much water do fenugreek plants need?
This depends on the soil quality, if it doesn’t retain water very well, you need to water your fenugreek plants every two days, however, don’t drown them!
How to harvest fenugreek seeds?
When the seedpods have fully grown and matured, mid-fall, take them and dry them.
Storing fenugreek seeds.
Fenugreek seeds can survive storage quite well, you just need to place them in an airtight container, in a dry and away from the sun place.
I use a dark mason jar for storing my fenugreek seeds and they will stay fresh for years.
